For every item in each of the tests choose one answer by circling option A, B or C. Remember, in the cause of accuracy of assessment, you should circle the action closest to what you would do, or have been doing. Do not opt for what you now think is the best or most admirable thing to do. After all, to want to put yourself in the most favourable light is hardly an emotionally intelligent way of responding. A key is provided at the end of the tests, which will enable you to score your answers.

Test 1

  1. You see an item in a mail order catalogue or on a Web site that you badly want but cannot really afford. What do you do?
Go ahead and buy it regardless.
Forget about it for the time being. .
Dither about buying it but say to yourself, 'I can always return it'.

  2. Tragically, a child chokes on a piece of a toy and dies. What is your first reaction to this news item?
'Toys are so shoddy these days; I bet it was from China.'
'What could the parents have been thinking?'
'What a terrible tragedy for the parents.'

  3. There is something you think you require but don't need for at least a few days. What do you do?
Go out more or less immediately to get it.
Phone the shop and have it put to one side.
Visit the shop in a few days' time, when convenient.

  4. You see a news item that puts someone in a bad light. It could be a rock star alleged to be drunk on a transatlantic flight. How do you respond?
Say to yourself, 'There's no smoke without fire'.
Wait until more facts come out.
    Believe the worst.

  5. You have a run-in with someone in a meeting. Afterwards, you are cross. What do you do?
Ring the person up straight away and have it out on the phone.
Put down in writing why you are cross.
Wait until the next time you meet that person and have it out then.

  6. A public figure you dislike apparently does something that puts that person in a good light. How do you respond?
Say to yourself, 'Let's see what happens'.
Say to yourself that it's a flash in the pan.
Admit to yourself that you are pleasantly surprised.

Test 2

  1. You are on holiday. It is raining when it is supposed to be sunny. How do you respond?
Moan until the cows come home to whoever will listen.

Say nothing and hope they will stop.

  5. You book into a hotel and find that the staff have overlooked your reservation although it turns out to be on the system. At first, the receptionist says that you can't be fitted in but later offers you a room in an annexe some way away. What do you do?
